Retinal detachment

The retina is a transparent tissue in the back of the eye that focuses the images we see. If it is torn or punctured, the internal fluids of the eye cause a separation of it from the underlying tissues.

Retinal detachment can occur without apparent cause, because of a trauma, diabetes or inflammatory process.
It usually goes along with loss of central or peripheral vision, depending on the encompassing area it can lead to capillary bleedings which cause internal opacities.

Symptoms:

•          Light flashes.
•          Blurred vision.
•         Eye floaters.
•        Shadows or partial or total blindness.

Solutions:

Depending on the extent most patients with retinal detachment need surgery. Some of the most common techniques:

•          Cryopexy.
•          Laser surgery.
•          Pneumatic retinopexy.
•         Vitrectomy.

In order to prevent irreversible vision loss early diagnosis is very important.
